How to Check Marital Status in Pakistan?
Marriage is a personal affair of a person. If a person wants to check his own marital record, he can do so. However, there are restrictions on checking the marital status of someone else.
Below are the different modes through which you can check marital status in Pakistan.
Check Your Own Marital Status
The Pakistani law allows you to check your own marital status only. Due to privacy laws, it is not open for everyone to check other people’s marital status.
You can only check your own:
- Marriage record
- Divorce record
The law does not allow you to check someone else’s marriage record.
Check Marital Status of Someone
The law of Pakistan only allows you to check your personal records. You cannot check the marital status of someone else in the country.
Modes to Check Your Own Marital Status
Below are the modes through which you can check your own marital status Through unmarried Certificate.
- Visit NADRA Office
If you want to check your own marriage record, the very first way is to visit the NADRA office.
- Visit your nearest NADRA office.
- Carry your original CNIC.
- Request the officials to check your marriage or divorce record.
NADRA is a government department that retains the record of every Pakistani individual. Upon your request, they can check record of your marriage or divorce in Pakistan.
- SMS Your ID Card Number to 8009
You can also check your marriage record or the record of your family members by sending your CNIC number to the helpline 8009.
- Previously, this helpline was operational.
- Currently, it is not working.
- However, you can still try, as it may become functional again in the near future.
When you send your CNIC number to this helpline, you will receive the record of your family members on your mobile phone.
- If your wife’s record appears in the message, it means that you are married.
- Apply for FRC
The third mode to check marital status in Pakistan is to apply for an FRC (Family Registration Certificate).
You can apply for an FRC at the NADRA office.
This certificate contains the record of your family members.
- If your wife’s name appears on the FRC, it means that you are married.
- If you were previously married and your wife’s name no longer appears on the FRC, it means that your status is now divorced.
- Pak ID App
Another way to check your own marriage record is through the Pak ID App.
The Government has launched this app, which is linked with NADRA.
- Register yourself on the app.
- After registration, you can view your family members’ details.
- If you are married, your wife’s record will appear.
- If you are divorced, your wife’s record will not appear in your family record.
- By Legal Procedure
You can also check marital status in Pakistan through the legal procedure.
Through this legal process, you can:
- Check your own personal record.
- Check the marriage or divorce record of someone else.
For this legal process:
- Hire the services of a family lawyer in Pakistan.
- The lawyer will file a case before the court.
- The court will direct the relevant department to submit the record before the court.
Where the Marriage Records Are Saved
Marriage records in Pakistan are maintained in both manual and computerized form.
- Manual marriage records are saved in the Union Council and entered manually in the registers.
- Computerized marriage records are saved in the IT Board of the country.
Whenever a computerized marriage or divorce certificate is issued in Pakistan, the record is stored in the IT Board’s backend system.

The marital status in NADRA does not instantly change when you get married.

- You get married.

- She applies for a new CNIC on the husband’s name.
Only then does NADRA:
- Change the wife’s marital status from single to married.
- Shift the wife’s family tree to the husband’s family tree.

Yes, a lawyer can check the marital status of someone through the legal process only.
Does Marital Record Get Changed After Court Marriage?
The marital record does not automatically change after obtaining the services of court marriage in Pakistan.
The process is as follows:
- Obtain the computerized marriage certificate.
- The wife visits the NADRA office.
- She applies for a new CNIC on the husband’s name.
Only then does the marital status get changed in the NADRA office.
Does Marital Status Get Changed After Divorce?
Yes, the marital status gets changed after divorce. However, it does not automatically change in the NADRA office.
After you are issued a divorce certificate in Pakistan:
- Take the divorce certificate to the NADRA office.
- Request NADRA to change your marital status from married to divorcee.
Only then will the marital status be updated in the NADRA record.
